Bensenville Fire Protection District #2 has Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Technicians who can work with parents and caregivers on proper car seat use and installation.
If you would like assistance with a car seat or booster seat, you can schedule to meet or talk with one of our CPS Technicians by clicking here or by calling 630-350-3441.
According to Illinois law, children must be restrained in an appropriate car seat/booster seat until age eight (8), but proper selection and use are best determined on a case by case basis. It is recommended that children stay restrained in their car seats until they outgrow the height and weight limits. This often means keeping children in boosters far beyond age 8. To see if your child is ready for the seat belt, try the 5-step test below:
1.) Does the child sit all the way back against the vehicle seat?
2.) Do the child’s knees completely bend over the edge of the vehicle seat with the feet touching the floor?
3.) Does the shoulder belt cross the child’s shoulder between the neck and arm and the lap belt fit low and snug across the hips?
4.) Does the vehicle seat provide the child with adequate head protection?
5.) Can the child stay seated in the position for the entire trip?
If the answer is NO to any of the questions above, the child is not ready to use an adult seat belt.
